Title
“A reprieve from thought”: Networks and narratives of the Sinsombrero translators and their contemporaries
Abstract
Based on Balló’s Simsombrero (“Hatless”) (2015) and Romero López’s monograph on female translators of the Silver Age (2016), this study pursues two main objectives: first, to examine the relationships among fourteen female translators born in the last quarter of the nineteenth century; and second, to explore their reflections on the act of translation. The ultimate aim is to recover and highlight these authors’ historical significance, with particular attention to their motivations as translation practitioners, as well as to identify the similarities and differences in their views and approaches to the practice of translation. To this end, the GEPHI graph software was employed following the methodology developed by the BIESES project to analyze the characteristics of the fourteen female translators, along with their personal and associative relationships. In a second phase, letters, diaries, prologues, articles, and archive-based research works were examined to gather these women’s reflections on the practice of translation. The analyses suggest that the group was characterized by intense interactions, particularly those centred around the Lyceum Club Femenino. In addition to serving as a means of survival in exile, translation also fulfilled other functions — professional, therapeutic and recreational, pedagogical and disseminative, literary and canonical, as well as political and ideological. Moreover, beyond literal translation, some authors applied freer and more creative approaches.
